Tenga Sol: ‘Tenga Sol EP’ [Review]
Opinion
With their eponymous debut EP, a collection of edgy/sexy live recordings, Southampton funk-rockers Tenga Sol have set out to prove their live prowess and succeeded admirably. Opening track Shot Down brings to mind ’70s cop show themes, bent detectives in flares, car chases, and girls in miniskirts; fans of soul legends Tower of Power will love second song Reasons; Driven offers laid back vibes almost as seductive as Cesaria Evora; Hold On continues that same vibe with some very nice Frusciante -esque guitar work; and The Only Remedy shifts gears into acoustic pop-rock with tasty vocal harmonies and a beautiful chorus hook.
I really like the production on this EP; it captures a tight but organic live sound very effectively. I’d love to hear some standard studio versions of these tracks too – given a fatter production job those songs would fit perfectly behind the credits at the end of a Tarantino movie.
Overall, Tenga Sol EP is a high-quality and heavily sexualised live set by a team of feel-heavy funkateers. Venues and promoters: pay attention to these guys, and get them on your stage ASAP.
