The Mighty Progerians & OMSQ: ‘Vertigo Split EP’ [Review]

Opinion

Side 1: The Mighty Progerians. The Earth is Flat; M.O.R.E; Vertigo

Fat guitar and bass tones! This band live up to their name from the moment you press play. Odd-rhythm riffs aplenty punctuated by doom-laden droning and lush trumpets; the sound of a mariachi band marching into hell. Broken-radio dissonance giving way to a heavy-as-fuck groove (M.O.R.E, I assume) and well-blended hardcore vocals. More distorted droning, a touch of trumpet. Back to the groove – and what a groove this is! Double-time hecticness. Trumpet solo. Yes! More luxuriously disturbing noise sends us into Vertigo. Cool prog sensibilities here, though I’m not entirely sure about the vocals. The music more than makes up for it though. Super-precise staccato stops providing a perfect contrast to earlier sludge – and a super-intense climactic riff to top it all off.

I’m won over.

Side 2: OMSQ. Glass Eye Contact

A solid 10-minute musical banquet. Filling and satisfying, but still rewards repeated listening. Tool-esque drumming and thick, sludgy production. Textured slices of raw noise; the sonic equivalent of a statue carved from granite. Epic. It’ll be interesting to see what these guys manage to achieve over the course of a full album.
