Beardyman – ‘Concentrations’ [Review]
If you’re looking to have your brain fucked in and enjoy the experience, Beardyman is the artist for you. A restless and relentless musical innovator and virtuoso beatboxing mouth-wizard, Beardyman holds little back on the appropriately-titled Concentrations, which is only a taster of what’s to come on his upcoming album Distractions.
First tune Concentrate is dense, intense, and tough yet pleasurable to digest, while Brain stutters with staccato beats, Yellow Magic Orchestra-esque melodies and wubs, and hilarious freestyle hooks. As always with Beardyman, it’s often impossible to comprehend how all this is possible with one man’s mouth and some technological gadgetry – and the best thing to do is to give up playing the “What sounds most like a voice?” guessing game and enjoy the music, which is 100% spectacular. By the time A View‘s barely believable summery jazz-funk vibes close things off, it’s time to hit repeat and start wishing that Distractions would drop sooner. As in, tomorrow sooner.
