Emilio Largo – ‘Control’ [Review]
When it comes to math-rock, ‘control’ is a key word. When odd time signatures, super-syncopated riffs, and all manner of other rhythmic tricks come into play, the results inevitably become difficult to suss out. In other words, the music feels unpredictable. Hyperactively labyrinthine. Out of control.
But in order to create that same sense of disorder – and get it down on record without sounding like a mushy pile of shit – the minds behind it all need to be in control, to be capable of making sense of some intensely twisted proceedings. If a math-oriented musician lacks that control, their critics (the “Fuck that, it’s all just random!” crowd) would have a point. And that just won’t do.
Fortunately, Emilio Largo have mastered both sides of the math-rock coin – and this fat, punchy track proves it. Control is a great mix of Arcane Roots-meet-Marmozets riffing and Biffy/SikTh-style vocals that’s proven pretty addictive here in TMMP Land. You can get it for free via the Bandcamp player below, but if you don’t think it’s worth a quid then you need to look in the mirror and really think about where your parents and society went wrong.
