New Kingston [Interview]

new kingston press shotNew Kingston are a band on the rise right now – and it’s safe to say they’ve earned it. From Brooklyn basements to an album (their third, Kingston City, reviewed here) released on New York’s own Easy Star Records, New Kingston have poured everything they have into their band, and are really reaping the rewards. Kingston City itself is noteworthy for its deeply chilled vibes and passionately-felt positive messages, and it’s no surprise that said long-player debuted at the top of Billboard’s reggae chart. TMMP caught up with New Kingston to talk memories, messages, and positivity…

What are your earliest musical memories?

I remember going to a show with our father many many years ago. We only knew how to play two songs at the time. It was a Dennis Brown song “Rain From The Skies” and another one I can’t remember. That was the first time we got a taste of performing live!

Who (or what) first inspired you to pick up your instruments?

Our father Courtney Panton is the man behind it all.

Describe each of the tracks on Kingston City in one sentence each.

Today – Something that everyone needs to hear.

Mystery Babylon – Theres so much going on that we can’t see. Be careful!

Who Tell Them – Got to legalize it!

Can’t Stop A Man – There will always be obstacles, but that will never stop us.

Honorable – We won’t conform to anything people try to put on us if it isn’t HONORABLE.

You Are Mine – A lovely song with a powerful message of love.

Good Luck Charm – Sometimes you have to simply tell someone how you feel.

Protect Me – We all need help along our journeys.

Certain Girls – We all go through our share of relationship stories and there are girls that are the way they are.

Key To Life – The key to life is to live an honorable one.

I Believe In Me – Believe in yourself and great things can happen.

Conquer Dem – Don’t give in to the pressures of the times.

What are your major passions outside of music?

Our passions vary. Some of us collect sneakers, some of us cook.

What inspires you?

Seeing the people who support us. There’s nothing more inspiring than people telling you not to give up!

What makes you happy?

Music.

What’s been the highlight of your journey so far?

Getting a chance to work with Easy Star Records and reaching the Number 1 spot on Billboard’s Reggae Charts.

What does the future hold for New Kingston?

There’s no saying, but we are excited to find out!
