Ben Williams – ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ [Review]
Although singer-songwriters are a dime a dozen-to-the-power-of-X, Ben Williams is an exceptional talent. A decorated sessioneer with a spectacular CV (including gigs with Status Quo and Mick Hucknall), the patience of a saint (Who Do You Think You Are? has been seven years in the making), and plenty of behind-the-mixing-desk knowhow (this radio-ready album was also self-produced), Ben Williams evidently knows what he’s doing on paper. Off of it, under the harsh glare of deep-listening attention, any sane individual’s conclusion would be exactly the same. There is no boundary between theory and practical reality here.
Every song on Who Do You Think You Are? is a corker – but the choice of second single has been spot on. Hold Your Fire is an excellent piece of classic songcraft, during which humanity’s most eagerly-indulged pastime – conflict – is transformed via wordplay into poetry and set against graceful, lilting guitars, subtle piano, and gut-twisting strings. Check out the video (along with another for this album’s cheeky title track) below, and mark April 13th on your calendar.
This album is something to be looked forward to.
