The TiPs – ‘Twists ‘N’ Turns’ [Review]

Play musical word association with the name “Düsseldorf,” and you’re likely to come up with either “Kraftwerk,” or perhaps “punk”. Reggae is unlikely to make the shortlist – but The TiPs are on a mission to change that.
Reggae has always possessed a keen sense of political and social awareness, and The TiPs keep that particular torch burning throughout Twists ‘N’ Turns. From immigration (Leaving Home) to the dangers of taking time for granted (Wasting Time) and the rarely-aired downsides of life as a musician (If You Want To; City Lights), these guys know how to choose and use their words wisely. There’re also plenty of brilliant rock and punk moments set to suck in fans of Skindred and Sonic Boom Six in Birds In Trees (featuring Skindred frontman Benji Webbe, who’s hopefully continuing to recover after recently being stabbed in the face and throat), Chosen Fool, and Johnny’s Song.
The TiPs’ background may be a strange one, but that’s never a bad thing. Normal is boring – and when listening to music, nobody wants to be bored. Twists ‘N’ Turns has all you need to keep your head bobbing, your neurons firing, and your ears ecstatically addicted.
I love this album – and if you’ve read this far, there’s no doubt you will too.
