Blood Youth – ‘Closure’ [Review]

Blood Youth - 'Closure' Review

Countless songs have been written about overcoming problems and moving on – but Blood Youth’s music cuts deeper than the average. 2015’s debut EP Inside My Head proved a hell- and hair-raising hardcore rampage, fuelled by Kaya Tarsus’ mind-inflaming personal struggles – and now, Blood Youth have reached the point of Closure.

It’s well deserved, to say the least.

Listening to Closure, it felt like my brain was being pulled in multiple time directions at once. Breathe drips with the glistening guitars and finely pitched vocals synonymous with modern punk, rock, and metal alike – and then 247 collapses into turn of the millennium alt-metal territory while perfectly encapsulating the force of nature energy that permeates the front row at a great no holds barred live show. Fat, bestial, delivered straight from the gut and backed up with a wild and intense bass performance, it showcases a new side to Blood Youth that’s more than welcome in my ears.

Mood Swing marks a near-return to Blood Youth’s familiar stomping ground, taking in scalpel-sharp guitars and direct, no-bullshit lyrics while keeping a laser-focussed eye on The All-Important Groove, and Closure closes things off with bouncy melodies and darkly pop-edged post-hardcore vibes. Whether you’re into singing along to finely crafted lyrical lines or sparking off a circle pit, Closure (the song) has you covered.

Overall, if Closure marks the end of an era for Blood Youth, it’s going to be very interesting to see what the next one brings.
