I’ve written so many evangelical words about Black Peaks in the past that I’m sure at some point, I’ll exhaust every possible positive adjective in the dictionary raving about them.
Instead, I’ll keep this short and simple. Statues is the album modern rock junkies worldwide have been waiting for – even if they don’t know it yet.
Long-time Black Peaks fans will already be familiar with Glass Built Castles, Crooks, and Say You Will. That trio of tracks lays out the Black Peaks template of beyond-hectic riffage, complicated-to-the-nth-degree combinations of freaky time signatures and insane syncopation, and standout hooks woven into the fabric of each serpentine tapestry in a demonstration of absolute musical mastery.
They’re also, as with everything Black Peaks have ever put out, fucking exceptional.
Diving into the unknown via Hang Em High (driving desert hurricane energy) before dropping back into the instantly recognisable Set In Stone and the cranium-shattering Saviour is an experience to savour and remember. From here on out, it’s all new: Statues Of Shame (Deftones’ twisted darkness merging with mathcore pulsations); Drones (succulent swells and menacing arpeggios heralding wicked distorted bass grooves); White Eyes (insistent strumming imploding into one hell of an anthem); brief and anxious interlude For Those That Sleep A Thousand Years; and cutting-edge climax To Take The First Turn (crushing guitars, neck-animating vocals from both Will Gardner and legendary ex-Reuben frontman Jamie Lenman, and classic loud-quiet dynamics toyed with to immense effect).
This album is perfect.
Statues drops this Friday, April 8. Get involved via the links below…
